Information on PT

Biome: Tundra

Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, meaning treeless plain. It is noted for its frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. Dead organic material functions as a nutrient pool. The two major nutrients are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is created by biological fixation, and phosphorus is created by precipitation.

Characteristics of Tundra
  1. Extremely cold climate
  2. Low biotic diversity
  3. Simple vegetation structure
  4. Limitation of drainage
  5. Short season of growth and reproduction
  6. Energy and nutrients in the form of dead organic material
  7. Large population oscillations

Aim: To show understanding of ecological relationships, food chain, food web, mode of nutrition and adaptation.
Specific outcome (1): Explain how limiting factors influence organism distribution. E.g. Explain why the organism is living there?
Specific Outcome (2): The impact of the interactions of individual members in the same population with the other organisms. E.g. How does your female organism affect your friend's make organism?
Specific Outcome (3): Explain the inter-relationship among species, population, community and eco-system.
Specific Outcome (4): Understand the different roles played by each organism in the eco system and the interdependent relationship.
Assessment Criteria:
1. Present information of the Habitat2. Explains the role of the organism created and its adaptations for its role. (Individual)3. Explains how the organism adapts to its habitat. (Individual)4. Create a 3-D organism. (Individual)5. A record of the Design Process to show idea development. (Individual)6. Present the interactions between organisms through a self playing presentation. (Group)

ASSESSMENT:
 Weighting: 10%
  Due date: 24th August

Deliverables:
- Journal (online/pdf)
- 1- page profile (pdf)
- Digital photographs showing different views of organism
- Self-playing presentation (< 5mins)

Submission:
- 24th August to your respective Biology teacher
- No delays/ deferment will be entertained
- 50% reduction (submission on 25th August)
- 75% reduction (submission no later than 26th August)

As the work to be submitted are all in soft-copy, you are expected to hand in your PT on time even if you are on MC.

What can/ should be i your journal?
- Your research- what you read up on and how are you going to utilize the information
- Details of the habitat and microhabitat that organism is living in.
- A record of all your group discussion.
- A record of relationship between your organism and your group mates's organism:
          1. Food chains and food webs
              2. Any changes along the way?
- Force-fitting activity
- Sketches of your organism
- A record of improvements made to your organism- your thoughts and your group mates' suggestions should be included
- An annotated photo guide to how you made your organism
          1. What were the materials used?
        2. How did you utilize them?
- Photograph of your final organism
- A brief reflection no more than 150 words
